Teaching Objectives    :
1.      Students are able to understand the issue of the ‘Stereotype of Gender Roles’ based on the novel of ‘The Fruitcake Special’.
2.      Students are able to  list down the characteristics of the characters from the song video of ‘You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift’

Steps in Teaching:

Pre-reading (Duration: 5 minutes)

The teacher shows a song video which is entitled “You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift” (please refer Material 1).
To initiate the beginning of the lesson by providing a suitable material to stimulate their thinking to get the overview first.

Teacher asks students whether they know what is the song all about and also try to relate to the short story “The Fruitcake Special”
To allow the students to make the connection between the song video and also the short story.

For the first activity, the teacher asks the students to work in a pair of two. They need to take out a piece of paper then describe the characteristics of the three main characters and also the differences between the characters especially between the male and female characters in the song video “You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift”.
Students are able to brainstorm the ideas by identifying what are the roles of the male and the female and their characteristics in the song video.

After 5 minutes, the teacher will select three pairs to read their answer by giving short explanation about it.
The teacher wants the students to share their findings to their classmates by exchanging other’s thoughts and opinions as well.

For the second activity, the teacher would like to have a small discussion among the students. Then, the teacher asks the student to divide themselves into three groups in order to execute this activity.
To allow the students to participate in the classroom and brainstorming ideas together.

The students will be given a topic or issue which is entitled “Stereotype of Gender Roles” by using the novel of “The Fruitcake Special”. The students need to focus on the characters in the novel itself in order to relate with the issue or topic.
To ensure the students are able to identify what are the stereotype of gender roles among the characters in the novel of The Fruitcake Special.

The teacher will give the opportunity to those three groups to present their findings and each group are able to ask any questions or maybe anyone would like to share their thoughts or opinions regarding the topic.
To allow the students to exchange their findings based on the topic or issue of “Stereotype of Gender Roles” by focussing the characters in the novel.


Post- reading (Duration: 5 minutes)

The teacher would like to continue the discussion for the upcoming class but with the different about gender issue. Students need to find any articles or newspaper excerpts regarding the issue of oppression towards women in Malaysia.
To allow students to work on their own in order to find another sources by using the internet by themselves.

Each group need to present their findings in the next lesson.
To train the students to understand fully the content of the lesson.
